We stopped at Second Street Brewing in Santa Fe for dinner. We’ve found breweries are a great place to stop on road trips because they usually have good food and they show off the local culture better than most restaurants. That night we got to see a live band and enjoy some New Mexican green chiles.
After Santa Fe, we had another hour and a half to Taos. The drive goes through several reservations and there were a lot of casinos. Once we made it to Taos, we checked in at the historic Hotel La Fonda. It’s an old adobe building with a really classic look. It’s right in the middle of the downtown area with lots of shops and restaurants nearby.
After unpacking the car, we headed out for drinks. We found a brewery nearby and tried a flight of their beers. We noticed a guy being particularly loud, talking to a family of four. He was talking about his job at the ski hill and reading them passages from a book with the teachings of an Indian philosopher. It was strange and entertaining.
After a little while, the family left to go home and we just knew he was going to come to our table next. Sure enough, he did. We talked about many of the same things he was telling the family next to us and he even read some of the same passages from his books. Eventually, his girlfriend came over and tried to get him to leave, but being as drunk as this guy was, he wasn’t having it. He spent the next 20 minutes telling us how terrible his relationship is. Eventually, the bar closed and we all went our separate ways, with him offering us a place to crash if we needed one. Lucky for us, we had a hotel to go back to.
